We confess: these books were among the few that eluded our book-gluttonous childhood. But the illustrations we glimpsed did not help: what self-respecting toad needed, or would want, a pile of cut stones in the manner of an English estate? Or are we misunderstanding?

The self-respecting toads we have known — and we have known some — belong in the kind of natural hall that would welcome nature spirits and small critters.
